Report: Rep. Grimm got money in envelopes
From The Times: One follower of the rabbi said in an interview that Mr. Grimm pressed him for $20,000. The follower said Mr. Grimm instructed him to meet him “near the F.B.I. building,” in Lower Manhattan, in summer 2010 to give the money. The follower said he handed over $5,000 in cash in an envelope to Mr. Grimm in Mr. Grimm’s car.

My story: [Councilman Jumaane] Williams, a freshman Democrat from Brooklyn, said he and others have repeatedly called for meetings with Bloomberg and NYPD commissioner Ray Kelly, but have been rebuffed. “If you don’t have it, you cannot blame a city who feels under siege with whatever way they have to react to get the respect that we deserve,” he said. Later he told...

NYPD Ray Kelly's apology, re: The Third Jihad
via NYPD spokesman Paul Browne: Statement by Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly: Nearly five years ago, I agreed to be interviewed about terrorist threats by a filmmaker with bona fides that included former employment with Dateline NBC and the White House for what ultimately would be released as “The Third Jihad.”  While it never became part of the Department’s curriculum, and was not authorized...

via: Here’s the full documentary (it runs for well over an hour) that was shown to about 1,500 police officers in 2010 and yesterday was rebuked by Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the NYPD, even though NYPD commissioner Ray Kelly sat down for an hour-and-a-half-long interview with the filmmaker. This morning, the Times editorial page called on Kelly (who even gets a credit at the end) to...

“Mr. Kelly should apologize for the film…”
– —The New York Times editorial page. They’re responding to a news report today that Kelly participated in the making of The Third Jihad, a documentary Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the NYPD said was inappropriate and should not have been shown to police officers.

from my roundup: ‘The Third Jihad’ “Bloomberg said neither he nor Police Commissioner Ray Kelly knew about the film being shown,” although an excerpt of a Kelly interview with another outlet was included in the movie. [Associated Press] Footage of Rudy Giuliani and Joseph Lieberman was also in the movie. [Carly Baldwin] “Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne said the...

It’s fun to think what would happen if the legislators submitted their performance to the public in a binding way, allowing New Yorkers to decide whether the way they’re doing their jobs merits a hike in the $79,500 (starting) salary, plus per diems.

Romney's consistency on taxes
Nick Confessore, David Kocieniewski and Michael Luo: If there is one thing Mr. Romney has been consistent on over the years, however, it is taxes. In his campaigns for the United States Senate, governor of Massachusetts and president, he has never once released his tax returns — not even in 1994, when he made a major issue out of Senator Edward M. Kennedy’s refusal to release his own returns.

My story: As internet giants Google, Wikipedia, Tumblr and others launch a protest today against anti-piracy legislation in Washington that they say could lead to internet censorship, one of the bill’s co-sponsors, Senator Chuck Schumer, said he hopes the bill can be tweaked to allow government officials and victims of intellectual-property theft to go “after the perpetrators without...

My story: “There definitely was an element of teacher-bashing going on,” said the president of the United Federation of Teachers, Michael Mulgrew, standing at the back of the school’s auditorium, where Bloomberg’s speech was delivered. The Village Voice's Powerless Politicians
The only thing I found interesting about the list — which isn’t at all serious or even logical —  is that it did not include embattled City Comptroller John Liu. The list, written by Steven Thraser (#50), did include a number of politicos: #8-Public Advocate Bill De Blasio #16-Former public advocate Mark Green #17-State Senator Ruben Diaz Sr. #18-Bronx Borough President Ruben...
